CHARACTERISTICS OF URINE MARKING
Urine marking is characterized by very distinct behavioral patterns. After selecting a vertical support, the cat sniffs the support, kneads the ground and then turns it back to the support. With the tail held vertically, the cat sprays a horizontal jet of urine. (Show picture of cat in spraying position.)It is important to distinguish urine marking from other forms of house-soiling since treatment approaches differ.
There are a number of other reasons why cats urinate outside the litter box, including:
* Urinary Tract Infection or Crystalluria
* Inadequate cleaning of the litter box
* Unacceptable type of litter or litter box
* Relocation of litter box to busy or new area
* Anxiety / stress
TYPES OF MARKING
The two most common types of marking are:Sexual - Male cats excited by the presence of a female in heat will leave urine marks on upright objects. Female marking is related to the onset of estrus.Reactional - This type of behavior is often due to a change in the cat's environment - new furniture, moving to a new house, a visitor or new occupants. Aggression between cats may manifest itself as spraying by either the victim or the aggressor cat.Urine marks are left by the cat at sites located between passageways and activity zones, such as corners of large protruding objects in the house.
Usage Instructions
For best results, it is important to get a proper diagnosis of behavioral urine marking by a licensed veterinarian.Urine marks should be cleaned with clear water only, as detergents and other cleansers may degrade the product. Feliway should then be sprayed directly onto urine mark spots - as well as onto prominent objects including furniture, window frames and doorways. Owners should be carefully instructed on the proper application of Feliway.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT SPRAY FELIWAY ON CATS.One depression of the nozzle should be applied approximately 4" from the site, 8" from the floor. Only one spray per application site is necessary. Urine marks and prominent objects should be treated one to two times daily for 30 days. If the cat is observed rubbing its own facial pheromones onto a spot, treatment at this location is no longer needed. Maintenance application every two to three days may be necessary in some situations. Cats demonstrating long-standing inter-cat aggression may need a behavioral modification program and concomitant drug therapy.
FOR URINE MARKING OR SCRATCHING:
Place the Feliway® Diffuser in the room where marking has taken place. If the cat marks several rooms with a total surface area of more than 650 sq. ft, use an additional diffuser in one of the other rooms that have been marked.
FOR LOSS OF APPETITE OR REDUCED DESIRE TO INTERACT AND PLAY:
Plug in the Feliway Diffuser in the room most used by the cat.
FELIWAY® Controls cat urine marking, scratching and stress naturally.
The secret to happy cats:
When a cat feels safe in its environment, it rubs its head against the furniture, the corners of walls or the bottom of the curtains, leaving substances called facial pheromones. These pheromones convey a message of well-being, calm and absence of stress. When there are changes in the cat's environment, (such as visits to the veterinarian, return from hospitalization, moving to a new home, new arrivals, rearrangement of furniture), or if the cat is scared, a state of unrest or stress may develop. This state can be conveyed by changes in behavior, such as urine marking, vertical scratching, loss of appetite, or refusal to play and interact. In these situations, FELIWAY Diffuser can be used to restore the natural balance. FELIWAY Diffuser mimics the cat's facial pheromones, creating a state of well-being and calm.
Reactions to stress expressed as:
Urine marking, Vertical scratching, Loss of appetite, Reduced desire to play, Reduced desire to interact in the following situations:
- Moving to a new home
