Horse products: Fly Spray

Horse Products

If you are looking for a product that does it all, look into one that is an insecticide, a repellent, and includes a sun-screen that shields horses from ultra-violet rays. This way, you give repellency, quick relief, and protection from many flying bugs like mosquitoes, gnats, and flies as well as protection from deer ticks and lice. Look for long lasting defense in a water and sweat resistant formula. The investment in a good product helps you try to avert the passing of any disease before it starts. Remember before application that you need to brush their coat thoroughly, and for really dirty animals you will want to shampoo them and wait for hair to dry before application. Note that you need to wear a rubber glove or mitt when applying as a wipe. (Read our product page for more specific directions and information.)

Common Horse Pest Descriptions

Following is a list of commonplace pests that can bother or even transmit diseases to your pony:

Fly - Two-winged insects, among which are deer flies which transmit tularemia and other diseases to mammals.

Mosquitoes - These have long, slender wings and a narrow body; they have piercing and sucking mouthparts that are similar to a needle which they use to feed on blood and nectar. In the US, the common house mosquito is a carrier of encephalitis.

Gnat - Biting flies with two wings, the term is most often used for blackflies, sandflies, and fungus gnats.

Lice - (also called louse) are actually small, wingless insects, some of which are sucking species that infest other creatures.

Tick - Mite like arachnids that are parasites. They feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and reptiles. A common thing they pass on is Lyme disease.

This is just a basic list of what you want to protect your cherished riding pony from. Most of these pests are not only annoying, but they can pass on diseases.
