Horse Health Products: Electrolyte Replenishment

Horse Health Products

Properly balanced body fluids help your horse be less susceptible to cramping caused by over-exertion. If you want to help them maintain the proper balance, look for the following ingredients in the powder you buy:

  • Dextrose
  • Magnesium Sulfate
  • Potassium Chloride
  • Sodium Bicarbonate
  • Sodium Chloride

In essence, it should contain the needed mineral salts that horses require. You should also make sure it has flavoring because it won't do you any good if they don't like the taste and won't swallow it. You might want to try orange or cherry flavor - you can even buy a smaller size to see which taste is preferred by "Lightning" or "Star". Make sure you follow the directions because there is such thing as too much of a good thing.

Measuring a Horse

If you have never had a pony before, you will need to make sure you understand the height and weight of your mount so you can know how much medication to give them if they get sick or need supplements. In the US, horses are measured in a certain way: one hand equals 4 inches. A standard size is 15.2 hh (meaning 15 hands plus 2 inches). There are miniature horses that are only 5 hands tall and larger breed that reach over 18 hands. You measure their height at the topmost point of their withers (which is the highest point of their back by their shoulder).
