Emergency: save your dog's life
Did you know that you can perform CPR on your pet? The lives of many animals have been saved by owners who knew what to do when their pets stopped breathing. Plan now what you would do in such an emergency.
CPR for pets is similar to CPR for humans. Do not attempt it if the animal is conscious and breathing. But if she is unconscious you need to follow just a few simple steps.
First, remove any obstructions from the air passage.
Second, holding her head back, close her jaw tightly and breathe into her nose. Hold the jaw closed or cover the entire mouth and nose with your mouth.
Third, perform chest compressions. For large dogs this can be done exactly as for a human. For a smaller dog, hold her on her side and compress the side of the rib cage. The compressions should be 60 per minute for large dogs, with up to 120 per minute for small dogs. Alternate 2 breaths with 30 compressions.
